A method for graphical presentation of the chemical composition of rocks that is used widely in the U.S.S.R. is described. The oxides of several quantities are calculated and then assigned letter symbols. The four most significant are called basic numerical characteristics and are as follows: a - the relative number of alkali metals in aluminum silicates, c - the relative number of calcium atoms in aluminum silicates, b - the relative number of all remaining metallic ions in ordinary silicates, and finally, s - the relative number of atoms of silicon. There are eight supplementary numerical characteristics. The ratio of sialic to femic components can be judged by the value of b, and an excess or deficiency of silica is shown by the relative value of s. The character of the - sialic components can be evaluated from the ratio of a to c. Detailed descriptions are given for performing the calculations and for constructing the alagiams. J. W. Clarke |
