Inhoud: This paper deals with the origin and evolution the main structural features of the southern Russian Platform including the Pripyat trough, the Dniepr-Donets depression, the Donets basin and its eastward continuant - the Donbas trough. The paper discusses in interesting detail the structural evolution of a large region over 1,500 km long in terms of the varying stratigraphic sections in the various linear depressions. Consedimentation structures are distinguished from post-depositional structures. The great differences in stratigraphic sections imply great differences in vertical movements on the floor of the depositional areas. Major folding in the Crimea-Caucasus occurred in Late Devonian time and was accompanied by volcanic activity and metamorphism A great geanticlthe was created at the end of the Devonian, which divided the geosyncline into the Paleozoic Caucasus and Donbas troughs. Notable features of these two depositional troughs are discussed, including the persistent Main thrust - a basement-rooted thrust that parallels fold axes in the northern part of the Donbas synclinorium. Donbas and Caucasus tectonic features are compared and contrasted. B. N. Cooper
