Inhoud: The author first reviews the petrographic classifications of ,humus coals, then presents a proposed genetic classification. Three tables are presented on the petrographic classification. The first gives the nomenclature of the humus coal microcomponents, the second a petrographic classification of humus coals, and the third the material composition and petrographic features of humus coal types. Table number four is the proposed genetic classification of humus coals from the principal basins of the U.S.S.R. This classification is based on the degree of decomposition and pulverization of plant tissue in the course of peat accumulation, as reflected in the structure of gelled, fusainized, and fusain-like substances. The first group is characterized by a low degree of decomposition of lignin-cellulose tissue. There coals originate in h mobile geotectonic province and indicate a rapid burial of peat and a short period of decomposition of plant material. The second group are characterized by a slight decomposition of tissue, and indicate sedimentary conditions somewhat similar to the first group. The third group is characterized by relatively advanced decomposition of tissue, and are associated with lacustrine marsh, littoral-marine, littoral-basin sedimentary conditions. Coals of the fourth group are characterized by strongly decomposed tissue and are associated with geotectonically stable peat marsh conditions. The fifth group shows nearly complete decomposition of the plant material and are associated with very stable conditions of very slow subsidence and burial. John R. Hughes
