This paper outlines the programmes of assessment and treatment for dyslexic pupils aged 7 to 10 years at the Centre of Speech and Language Therapy which forms part of the 'Barczi Gusztav' Training College for Teachers of the Handicapped in Budapest, Hungary. The approaches to assessment and remediation used with a large number of children referred to the Centre for problems of reading, writing and spelling have been wide-ranging and complex. Assessment is based on information obtained from detailed case-histories, as well as from medical, psychological, pedagogical and logopedical investigations. Treatment may include remedial education, psychomotor, graphomotor and logopedic programmes and psychotherapy. Stimulating motivation and interest is stressed in involving the children in skill-developing tasks related to reading, writing and spelling. In most cases, significant improvement is achieved after 18 to 24 months of attendance at the Centre.
