In 1985 the Spanish Ministry of Education started an eight-year project of integration of children with special needs in ordinary schools. At the same time an evaluation programme was undertaken with the objective of understanding and monitoring the development of the project. This paper presents the main results of the evaluation, guided by a theoretical model. The model sets up four main interrelated dimensions: school project, teachers' style of teaching, pupils' achievement and parents' attitudes. Quantitative and qualitative approaches were included in the three year longitudinal design used. The results are discussed to demonstrate the usefulness of the theoretical model and the effectiveness of the integration project. |
