This study examines the relationships among locus of control, commitment to college, and academic performance and retention of community college students enrolled in introductory baccalaureate courses. Findings include that locus of control, objectives, and commitment to completing courses are minimally related to performance, but more strongly related to retention. Implications of the study include: (1) interactions may not be crucial factors of success or persistence for community college students, (2) community colleges need to examine and communicate the extent to which students achieve their goals in spite of or even as a result of dropping classes or stopping out of college, and (3) colleges need to explore differential counseling and advisement for groups of students for whom traditional measures are not predictive.
