Contents: This paper refers to Venezuelan student movements during the decade of the 1980s, placing special emphasis in the re-appearance of student protests beginning with the so-called “Merida March” in 1987. To begin with we consider distinct theories related to social movements and their importance in the study of student movements. We also touch on the historic role of the student movement in Venezuela and Latin America, and its protagonist role in the new economic reality dominated by neo-liberalism and globalization. In second place the programs of autonomous movements that arose in university student populations in the 1980s are analyzed. Finally, the special case of the student movement in 1987 and its repercussion in the national political scene is commented on. The conclusion was that student movements in 1987-88 legitimized the practice of street fighting and looting which was later expanded on in 1989, and that anti-bi-party system discourse used by military leaders in the attempted 1992 coupe was the same discourse used in student protests during the 1980s.
