This discussion of Lucyann Carlton and Renee challenges current dissociative/multiple self theories and advances an alternate perspective centered on the idea of embodied and emotional memory. The author does this by drawing on organic systems conceptions of implicit relational knowing and on an experiential worlds idea of unconsciously organized memory, as well as on a rethinking of selfhood as embodied participation in human conversation. This kind of memory characterizes experiential worlds as a form of mutual inhabiting. From an intersubjective systems perspective, the author emphasizes the importance of understanding the experiential world of the analyst as well as that of the patient. |
