Many consumer health Web sites are conceived and/or managed by librarians and have a smaller geographic or topical focus (not to mention, budget) than the “heavy hitter” sites such as MED-LINEplus or http://MayoClinic.com. Yet, these smaller sites may require as much time and effort to develop and maintain as the larger sites. Does their usage, in terms of Web site traffic, justify the time and work involved for the Webmaster, who may have numerous additional responsibilities? This article seeks to establish some benchmarks for smaller consumer health sites in terms of usage as well as time and funds spent on the site by the Webmaster and institution. The author's consumer health site, Health InfoNet of Alabama, is used as an illustrative case. |
