The paper examines Vietnam's tourism industry in the late twentieth century and the contribution of Foreign Direct Investment to its development. Aspects of tourism in the country and official policies are discussed, recent trends indicating a slowdown in growth rates. There has also been a marked reduction in investment as a result of internal and external factors including the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s. Future prospects are considered and barriers to overcome in realizing objectives identified. Findings suggest the challenges confronting emerging destinations and economics as they seek to develop tourism and some of the limitations of relying on Foreign Direct Investment. |
