This paper explores the relevance of Lyotard's philosophy of differend(s) for a theory of intercultural communication. Lyotard rightly contends that it is not necessary for both interlocutors to speak the same language for successful communication to occur. Yet he exaggerates both the anthropomorphic character of Wittgenstein's later philosophy and the differend(s) in intercultural interaction. Moreover, there are anthropomorphic remnants in Lyotard's own theory. Despite this, the theory proves to be a valuable alternative to both Habermas's transcendental pragmatics and Rorty's ethnocentric pragmatism. In dit artikel exploreer ik de relevantie van Lyotards filosofie van de differend(s) voor een theorie over interculturele communicatie. Lyotard beweert terecht dat geslaagde communicatie niet vereist dat de participanten idealiter dezelfde taal spreken. Hij overdrijft echter zowel de antropomorfe aard van Wittgensteins latere filosofie als de differend(s) in interculturele interacties. Bovendien zijn er in Lyotards eigen theorie antropomorfe overblijfselen. Toch blijkt zijn theorie een waardevol alternatief te zijn voor zowel Habermas' transcendentale pragmatiek als voor Rorty's etnocentrisch pragmatisme. |
