Preparation of the “Gondwana” Coals. I. Washability Characteristics

Titel: Preparation of the “Gondwana” Coals. I. Washability Characteristics
Auteur: Sanders, G. J.

Jaar: 1986
Inhoud: The Gondwana coals of the Southern Hemisphere represent some 25% of all known reserves. As an indigenous energy source they are thus highly significant in terms of a strong industrial base for the third-world countries. They are also important in terms of the internationally traded coals and as such occupy a unique position in the World's economy. This first paper of a two-part series describes the geographical origin, mode of deposition and resulting properties of these materials. Washability characteristics in terms of yields, ashes, density distributions and near gravity material are used to compare the theoretical washing response of some nine Gondwana coals with three of their Northern European counterparts. Liberation characteristics are also discussed and it is shown that unlike the Northern coals, significant benefits can be obtained by the forced breakage of these materials. It is concluded that the general distribution of mineral matter throughout the Gondwana coals is such that theoretical ash/yield relationships are significantly inferior to those of the three Carboniferous coals. The second paper in this series describes predictions made as to the preferred method of preparation.
