The number of primary schools with a teacher responsible for coordinating and developing science in the curriculum (a science co-ordinator) has increased dramatically since 1978. However co-ordinators are not having the impact they should on the quality of science in the schools. This in part is due to the restricted view of the role that is held by head teachers, co-ordinators and classteachers. The nature of the science co-ordinator's role is considered and the way in which it is perceived discussed. A model for appraising the role of the science co-ordinator more thoroughly is proposed and ways of applying the model are considered. |
