Jaar: 1996-01-09
Inhoud: Data from all patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) admitted to Shepherd Center from 1975 to 1991 was analyzed to identify factors associated with patients injured at ages 60 and older. In the elderly patients, 40% of injuries were due to medical/disease etiologies and 29% resulted from falls. The elderly group had higher rates of preexisting medical conditions, complications, and mortality than did the under-60 patients. Older patients were also hospitalized longer, were less often functionally independent at discharge from rehabilitation, and faced greater risks of adjustment difficulties. All geriatric-care professionals involved in the treatment of elderly people with SCI must be well-informed of the special characteristics and needs of this group.
