Intervention methods that empower older people to become more active participants in their own health care process are needed. This article presents a model of health behavior that consists of three domains: cognition which is the way health information is obtained, processed, and learned; affect which is the emotional response to health and health behavior; and resources which are the formal and informal supports available and accessed by older people. Based upon this multidimensional model of health, interviews with older adults (N = 40) were conducted to determine their knowledge, concerns, and practices in health areas, as well as their connection to supports. Implications for health interventions are presented which include a sensitivity to cultural aspects are presented which include a sensitivity to cultural aspects of health for older individuals, and the need to translate health information into behavioral change.
