In this article, the author looks at the early years of the Center for Studies in Aging of the University of North Texas and proposes a future characterized by "discontinuous change." Five imperatives of change, demographics, economics, ethics, work force, and care managements are discussed. It is contended that, for the future, new ways of thinking about the skills and knowledge that will be needed to manage aging services well are essential.
