This paper focuses on a change process used by one University department to upgrade geriatrics education in their residency program. The essential steps in the process are obtaining administrative support, involving the faculty and trainees throughout the process, collecting systematic needs assessment data, validating the results of the needs assessment data, developing an action plan coming from the agreed upon needs and implementing the educational interventions. With the application of this process, there can be a real improvement in education in aging and health. Observations coming from faculty and residents' needs assessment and site visits raise issues for training and for interdisciplinary work. These issues relate to the need to plan educational activities which may be apart from service commitments. |
