The National Institute on Aging (NIA) recently established, within the Public Information Office, the Health Education and Communications Cluster to disseminate the results of NIA-supported research to health professionals with an interest in aging. The first step in this dissemination process was to evaluate the health information needs of this special target audience and to learn the best ways to reach them with accurate, appropriate information on aging that will benefit them and their patients. The NIA sponsored a workshop for representatives from 33 selected health care professional associations to define information needs and set continuing education priorities in aging, develop strategies to meet these needs, and establish the NIA as the coordinator and continuing resource for a National Aging Information and Education Program. The rationale for the workshop, its organization, and the recommendations of the participants are presented here. |
