Inhoud: Clinical training in geriatrics emphasizes the use of an interdisciplinary team in caring for the elderly patient. To examine how residency programs use non-physician professionals to teach geriatrics, a random sample consisting of one-third of all 420 internal medicine and 378 family practice training programs in the United States was surveyed. Thirty four percent of internal medicine programs and 68% of family practice programs sampled had geriatrics curriculums that used an interdisciplinary team. Nurses and social workers were frequently used in the educational process by over 70% of these programs. Other professions were much less commonly involved in residency training. The most common role was providing clinical services, although about half of the programs used non-physician professionals to lecture to residents. A minority of programs use non-physician professionals in curriculum planning, evaluation, or precepting roles. It is concluded that non-physician professionals have not been substantially integrated into geriatrics curriculums at the residency level.
