This article explores the creative potentials and activities of senior scholars. First, a comparison is drawn regarding the productivity of scholars across age groups, beginning with a definition of the new old age and a discussion of the advantages in longevity and health exhibited by academics. Next, direct measurements of quality and quantity of scientific activity are explored, with emphasis given to the work of Steven Cole who studied productivity as measured by publication and citation rates in a variety of disciplines. Finally, the concept of wisdom is examined. It is concluded that, despite a trend toward behavioral slowing with age, the experience and wisdom of senior academics, coupled with better health and later "old age," make them an important resource for society. To benefit from this resource, we now must develop mechanisms to make optimal use of the skills and creative potentials of this group.
