Theoretically, this article adopts a transactional perspective, emphasizing an interplay between the person and his or her situation/ environment. It proceeds from the position that senior scholars can best contribute to research and applied work in their respective fields if they meet current demands of these fields. It addresses such questions as: What are the specific competencies of elderly scholars in contrast to those of their younger colleagues? How are they developed? And, can they really meet important demands of our present scientific world? In answering these questions, the life-long interplay between demans and personal resources in other words, transactions that have led to the development of competence, must be recognized. The focus is not on cognitive competencies only. Rather, biographically developed personal and social competencies of elder schoalars are also explored. |
