The Carboniferous-Permian boundary in Russia is gradational. In South Timan this part of the section is better exposed and faunally characterized than in the central provinces of the Russian Platform. In the past the Carboniferous-Permian boundary has been placed either at the base or near the top of the transitional sequence (Schwagerina interval). This paper places the boundary within the Schwagerina interval at the base of the Pasayel horizon which marks the beginning of a transgressive-regressive cycle. The Pasayel horizon differs noticeably from the underlying horizons both faunally (fusulinids and brachiopods) and lithologically. D. W. Trexler |
