Inhoud: A tectonic suture zone is a very narrow and extended zone of complex structure representing the surface expression of faults lying at great depths. Such zones separate major blocks of the crust and differ greatly in history and morphology. Certain aspects of the structure and history of these zones in the Caucasus beginning in Paleozoic time are considered. Tectonic sutures joined five main lengthwise tectonic elements during the Alpine phase: 1) The Ciscaucasian Epihercynian Platform; 2) the High Caucasus geosyncline (now a meganticlinorium), 3) the Transcausasian central massif, 4) the Sorrikhet-Kafan geosyncline (now an anticlinal zone), and 5) the Armenian geanticline. The best seen sutures are the marginal Tyrnyauz-Pshekish bounding the high Caucasus geosyncline on the north; and the Kakheta-Lechkhum suture bounding it from the side of the Transcaucasian central massif. Some features of the main tectonic blocks are described in order to reveal the history of sutures. Study of these two sutures show three types of structure regularly occur: 1) narrow straight depressions, 2) narrow straight steps, and 3) tectonic steps. The movement of the adjacent major blocks is the decisive factor. Although much remains unclear, the author believes that sinking in a suture zone in conjunction with uplifting in adjacent blocks is a result of tension in the blocks being uplifted. W. D. Lowry
