A major factor limiting our knowledge base in consultation is the use of traditional or conventional methods for reporting consultation outcome research that rely mainly on group averages and statistical significance tests to evaluate the effects of consultation. This article provides researchers and practitioners with alternative methods for reporting consultation outcomes and provides recommendations for future practice. Three alternative methods are discussed and critically evaluated: (a) social validation, (b) single case experimental designs, and (c) reliable change indices. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are described and guidelines for researchers and practitioners are discussed. |
