Inhoud: Although previous research has investigated the effects on subsequent acceptance of the language used in intervention descriptions during consultation, most studies have confounded the effects of jargon with the effects of labeling and/or differing theoretical orientations or rationales. This study sought to isolate and assess the effects of technical language on acceptance of a common reductive intervention, time-out. Subjects included 67 experienced regular and special education teachers and 70 undergraduates. In contrast to previous research, results suggested that the presence of behavioral jargon can have a facilitative effect on teachers' acceptance of an intervention. No differences were found as a function of teacher experience. Undergraduates showed no preference for jargon in descriptions of time-out as did teachers. Results are compared to previous studies of the effects of jargon on intervention acceptability.
