Compared 49 second- and third-grade children of divorce with a demographically matched sample of 83 children from intact families on several teacher-rated, parent-rated, and self-report measures of anxiety and depression. Across rater sources, children of divorce were judged to have higher levels of anxiety and depression than comparison subjects, and also to be experiencing more school adjustment problems in general. These findings point to the need for preventive interventions with young children of divorce that take into account their susceptibility to anxiety and depression. |
