This case study describes a variation of common desensitization procedures for use with children. The procedure combined the use of emotive imagery, play, covert and overt modeling, and behavioral rehearsal in the treatment of a seven-year old child who had a severe phobic reaction to dogs. Baseline treatment and follow-up data are provided from the charting of unaccompanied excursions from the yard and number of contacts with peers. A behavioral avoidance test was also administered. Follow-up was evaluated 15 months after treatment. The procedure described was effective in eliminating the maladaptive avoidance behavior and increasing adaptive social interaction. |
