The personality dimensions of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) concomitant with rated body weight were investigated for 112 normal adolescents in a multivariate fashion. The results showed that some 30% of the variability in subjects' rated body weight could be explained by 11 first-order and two second-order factors of the 16PF. Ninety percent of the variance accounted for could be explained by the submissiveness, depression, social, awareness and boldness, suspicious ideation, and anxiety factors of the 16PF. It was hypothesized that the obese adolescent may have learned a number of interpersonal skills necessary to cope in social situations where perceived body weight was at issue. |
