Command-elicited child negative verbalizations were assessed during the process of training parents to alter the non-compliant behavior of their preschool children. Two analyses of the negative verbalization data are presented. The first analysis indicated the presence of a treatment generalization effect from noncompliance to negative verbalization. The second analysis evaluated adventitious punishment as a possible explanation for the treatment generalization. Although the mechanism of treatment generalization was not identified, a parent treatment for command-elicited negative verbalizations was empirically supported. The treatment procedure's lack of face validity is discussed. |
