Jaar: 1993
Inhoud: In 1991, a large research project was started concerning the influences of social (home-environment) and within-school determinants upon children's school careers. The subject of this longitudinal project is a cohort of about 450 four-year-olds attending 45 classes in 28 primary schools. The school careers of children with different ethnic-cultural family backgrounds and children with low and middle socio-economic status are emphasized. A part of the project has been dedicated to examining the influence of school, class and curriculum upon teaching characteristics and school career. This article presents the background and the theoretical framework of this instruction-context study. It describes the construction of three curriculum variables: orderly climate, acquisition of basic skills, and evaluation of pupil progress. The main question was whether it might be possible to operationalize these concepts and find differences between teachers. Some of the results showing that there are, indeed, differences between teachers are presented here.
