Titel: Is the coaching fit for purpose? A typology of coaching and learning approaches
Auteur: Brockbank, Anne
Verschenen in: Coaching
Paginering: Jaargang 1 (2008) nr. 2 pagina's 132-144
Jaar: 2008-09
Inhoud: The paper offers a typology of coaching based on social learning theory, giving four approaches: functionalist, engagement, revolutionary and evolutionary. Each approach adopts a view of reality, which is either subjective or objective, and each approach seeks a learning outcome that is typified by transformation or equilibrium. A range of coaching practices is inspected in relation to three of these approaches using the following questions: Whose purpose? What process? Which learning outcome? The likely learning outcomes are discussed and evaluated and the process of coaching is also discussed. The paper warns of the potential for disappointment when a functionalist or engagement approach is used whilst the client group expects a more evolutionary approach. The paper concludes with recommendations for coaches to ensure that the coaching they are offering is truly fit for purpose.
