The question is raised how marine geodetic technology can serve the ocean industry, including the oil and gas industry, the shipping industry, the fishing industry, and the deep-ocean mining industry. The Norwegian continental shelf is regarded as a reference area. The conclusion is that marine geodetic support of the ocean industry is indispensable. However many problems are not yet solved due to lack of technology. Some problems are cost-effective area covering mapping, continuous monitoring of seafloor subsidence, highly accurate placement of heavy platforms, and precise positioning on the deep ocean seafloor. Considerable research efforts remain to be done to meet the severe requests and requirements. |
