Neighbourhood regeneration of Glasgow's southside: Implications for American cities

Titel: Neighbourhood regeneration of Glasgow's southside: Implications for American cities
Auteur: Varady, David P.
Verschenen in: Journal of urban design
Paginering: Jaargang 1 (1996) nr. 2 pagina's 201-214
Jaar: 1996-06
Inhoud: This paper examines three quite different neighbourhood regeneration projects on the southside of Glasgow (in the Gorbals, Govanhill and Castlemilk) and draws parallels with American revitalization efforts. Crown Street Regeneration in the Gorbals (a former slum clearance renewal area) emphasizes the restoration of Glasgow's traditional tenemental architecture rather than the creation of an 'in town' suburb as in the South Bronx, New York City. Govanhill Housing Association's tenemental rehabilitation and economic development efforts resemble those of the more successful community development corporations (CDCs) in the USA. The massive restructuring of Castlemilk, a large council housing estate, including the introduction of private market housing, resembles efforts to promote income mixing in American public housing projects. Implications for American efforts, based on Glasgow's experiences, are discussed.
