Inhoud: The distribution of the instantaneous thermal and the residual stresses in castings of spherical shape due to solidification is calculated A numerical solution is obtained for the heat conduction problem in which a liquid, initially at the melting temperature, becomes solidified by heat transfer to a mold whose temperature is constant but lower than the melting temperature. Particular attention is paid to the behavior at the last instant of solidification, where the velocity of the melt /solid boundary becomes unbounded. Improved numerical accuracy in this range is obtained by transforming the governing equations into a domain in which the central region is expanded Based on the quasi-static approach, the thermal stress problem is decoupled from the heat conduction problem. A linear isotropic thermoelastic model for the solidified material is used to determine the transient and residual stresses. The transient stresses have no impact on the final residual stress field Numerical results show that for the central region of the sphere, the radial residual stress is tensile and unbounded while the tangential residual stress is compressive and unbounded At the outer boundary, the tangential residual stress is compressive and unbounded Analytical results are obtained for the limiting case in which the Stefan number is zero and are compared with the numerical results.
