Benzidine is included on the List of Priority Substances to be assessed under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Based on available data, it is concluded that benzidine is “carcinogenic to humans”. Although the lack of sufficient data on exposure precluded comparison of estimates of the total daily intake of benzidine to quantitative estimates of cancer potency, the priority for consideration of options to reduce exposure of the general population is considered to be low, owing to the lack of reported use of this substance in Canada and its rapid degradation in the environment. |
