In this assessment of benzene as a Priority Substance under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, estimates of the average daily intake are presented and available data on the potential health effects in humans are evaluated. Based on the sufficient weight of evidence of carcinogenicity in epidemiological studies and supporting data from studies in experimental animals, benzene has been classified as “carcinogenic to humans”. Based on comparison of levels of benzene present in the general environment in Canada with the potential of this substance to induce cancer, the priority for investigation of options to reduce exposure in the general environment is considered to be high compared to that of other substances assessed in the Priority Substances program. |
