Eleven compounds associated with sex attractant activity were isolated from female Spodoptera exigua (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and identified as tetradecan-1-ol, (Z)-9-tetradecen-l-ol, (E)-9-tetradecen-l-ol, (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadien-l-ol, (Z,Z)-9,12-tetradecadien-l-ol, the acetates of these alcohols, and (Z)-7-tetradecen-l-ol acetate. A mixture of synthetic (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadien-l-ol acetate and (Z)-9-tetradecen-l-ol, in a 5:4 ratio, was equal to live females, to the total hexane wash of females, or to a mixture of all eleven synthetic compounds in attracting wild males in the field.
