Gas Chromatographic analysis of environmental contaminants, such as organochlorine pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. present in trace levels, demands stringent standards of purity of solvents and reagents used. Identification by gas chrotnatography-mass spectrometry of the impurities found in commercially-purified hexane, anhydrous sodium sulfate and sodium bicarbonate are presented to show their inadequacies for trace analysis. This paper will also describe methods of purification of hexane, sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate and water for ultra-trace analysis.
