Since the 'crisis' approach in its various manifestations has been represented as the acme of political development theorizing, it deserves a critical appraisal. But what makes one conceptual model superior to another one? A brief exploration into the philosophy of social science suggests that the choice of a framework should be underpinned by an awareness of its uses in the spheres of both political analysis and political action. This mode of evaluation is then applied to the two main variants of crisis models. Both are found fundamentally flawed: neither possesses significant explanatory power, while one has disquieting conservative and authoritarian implications for political action. |
