The transmission of improved technology from one economy to another is an important aspect of economic development. However, the difficulties encountered by development efforts designed to foster such transmission indicate a far from complete understanding of the technical and economic factors involved. This paper examines the experience of sugarcane varietal transfer between countries in an attempt to identify factors which have determined the extent of transmission of this particular form of technology. The sugarcane variety 'embodies' a major part of the technology of sugarcane production. This paper will first discuss the development of sugarcane varieties and their transmission largely from an historical perspective. This discussion will reveal that the sugarcane experiment stations have played a crucial role both in varietal development and in varietal transmission. That role is explored somewhat more systematically in the second part of the paper. Finally, a discussion of the relevance of this experience to other agricultural technology is presented. |
