The kinetics of the reaction of eight monosaccharides and the model compound acetoin with sodium salt of N-bromo-p-toluenesulfonamide in hydrochloric acid solutions was studied at 25 °C. The low value of the ratio of the second-order rate constants k2 (Acetoin)/k2 (Glucose) and the low reactivity of ketosugars relative to that of aldosugars indicate that the ring forms of the aldosugars are involved in the oxidations. A mechanism consistent with the experimental observations is proposed. The configurations and reactivities of aldosugars are compared. |
