Policy orientations of city managers: a national survey report

Titel: Policy orientations of city managers: a national survey report
Auteur: Green, Roy E.
Reed, B.J.
Verschenen in: International journal of public administration
Paginering: Jaargang 2 (1980) nr. 1 pagina's 1-24
Jaar: 1980
Inhoud: This article explores the political and social orientations of over one-quarter of the city managers and city administrators in the United States. It was found that city managers perceive themselves as more conservative than liberal even though their political affiliations are quite evenly split between Republicans, Democrats and independents. A majority of the managers gave conservative responses an three out of four propositions concerning economic welfare and on issues related to labor union involvement in the public and private sector. Responses on the manager survey also reflected a reasonably high degree of political tolerance, but a relatively conservative attitude toward federal involvement in areas which have been considered to be within the local prerogative (schools, health care, etc . ). Finally, the results of this survey of city managers indicates a much stronger tie to the business community than previous sweys have indicated, both in terms of alternative vocations and in terms of conservative attitudes toward policy issues.
