The influence of agricultural development on crop diseases

Titel: The influence of agricultural development on crop diseases
Auteur: Waller, J. M.
Verschenen in: International journal of pest management
Paginering: Jaargang 30 (1984) nr. 1 pagina's 86-93
Jaar: 1984-03
Inhoud: Agricultural development is causing both quantitative and qualitative changes in the economics, biology and control of plant diseases. While many production practices have increased general crop health, some have increased the vulnerability of crops to diseases. More intensive land use has reduced the seasonal epidemiological constraints on many pathogens of annual crops. Expansion of crops to new areas has exposed their susceptibilities to new pathogens, new crop varieties have introduced new susceptibilities to old pathogens and the increased movement of produce and germplasm has spread pathogens to new areas. Greater investment in agricultural inputs demanded by more intensive production systems has increased the intrinsic value both of crops and of the losses caused by diseases. Economic options for disease control have broadened but static prices for produce have necessitated careful cost/benefit analysis and this has been a spur to advance disease control methodology.
