Upland sugarcane trials in Niger State, Nigeria, were examined to assess the importance of termites in causing the reported heavy losses. In two plots termites were considered responsible for germination failure in 22.8% and 27.8% of cases. Desiccation (often followed by termite damage) was responsible for a further 8.6% and 16.7% respectively. Most damage was attributed to Macrotermes subhyalinus (Rambur) and Odontotermes smeathmani (Fuller), but other species may be important at different times in the year. |
