This discussion presents an approach to solving dilemmas and applies it to the question of diversifying the traditional curriculum. The discussion is organized around two options: to diversify the curriculum, or to retain the traditional curriculum. Four values — autonomous choice, truth, social welfare and promise-keeping — are examined in connection with the options. Justification for each option is given in terms of the values upon which the option depends, the import of the values and the likelihood that the option promotes or protects the values. Using this approach, the authors conclude that the values upon which the options depend are more likely to be realized under a diverse curriculum. |
