Experimental investigations of noise in Adler tubes with imperfect vacuum (p≳ 10-7 mm Hg) reveal the presence of an anomalous noise peak (100-10 000°k). The peak occurs at a frequency somewhat lower than the cyclotron frequency. It is proposed that the peak is produced by elastically scattered beam electrons travelling slowly through the input coupler. The phenomenon is described in terms of an idealized theory and results from an experimental tube with variable gas pressure (Hs) are reported. The agreement betweorj theory and experiment is good and it is concluded that the residual gas pressure should not be higher than about 10-8mm Hg |
