Several volumes and especially the 33rd and 34th of Plinius' Historia naturalis contain very relevant information about metallurgy. Plinius describes the methods of mining and alloying precious metals as gold and silver. He gives also an account of their refining, silver plating and tinning with many details on copper and its alloyings, lead and tin. Ancient metallurgists manufactured iron as well as cast-iron. Plinius mentions in fact some cast-iron statues. Thermic treatment and forge welding were well known. But the description given about the refining of copper and tin is not clear. Brass and antimony are just mentioned. Some of these informations are also wrong or fantastic. |
