First there is an outline of four types of 19th century theoretical thinking on technology in Germany: views of absolutism, economic liberalism, Catholic romanticism, and Marxism. On the other hand some historical examples of how technology was actually dealt with — e.g. machine-breaking in the early 19th century — are given. Finally some points about attitudes and behaviour of man in reference to technology are set out. The main argument is that hermetic politico-philosophical theories tend to formulate definitive views of the system of technology, but that technology is no central issue in everyday life. |
