The statistical evaluation of a large longitudinal genealogical and twin study revealed that the contribution of hereditary factors to the variance of intelligence is high at any age and at any level of intelligence (high intelligence included). This conclusion is supported by the pedigrees of families with high IQ. Furthermore, there is great irregularity in the development of intellectual level from childhood to adulthood. It is proposed that one major fact causing IQ fluctuation is the alternation of stagnation stages with acceleration stages in mental development. Gifted children are not a homogeneous group, but display different curves of intellectual development. This phenomenon has important consequences for long term predictions about children and for their education. |
