A three-fold typology of owner-managers and their businesses has been developed by Chell et al. (1991). The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how such a categorization may be modelled using neural networks and the results used for prediction purposes. Artificial neural networks are described and in particular the back-propagation method. The data on 31 business owners are divided into two sets; 25 are used as a training set and the remaining 6 used to evaluate the performance of the network after training. An example is selected in order to demonstrate the application of the trained network. The aptness and some of the drawbacks of this method are discussed. |
